Words Without Borders Receives 2025 National Endowment for the Arts Grant

The award will support WWB’s award-winning digital magazine of international literature and its literary events series.

New York, New York, January 14, 2025—The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced today that it will distribute more than $31.8 million in support of 1,127 arts and cultural organizations nationwide. Words Without Borders is honored to be named among the NEA’s 2025 grantees. The Grants for Arts Projects award will fund the publication of WWB’s award-winning digital magazine and its free literary events series.

The NEA’s Grants for Arts Projects provide comprehensive and expansive funding opportunities for communities. Through project-based funding, the program supports opportunities for public engagement with the arts and arts education, for the integration of the arts with strategies promoting the health and well-being of people and communities, and for the improvement of overall capacity and capabilities within the arts sector.

“The NEA is proud to continue our nearly sixty years of supporting the efforts of organizations and artists that help to shape our country’s vibrant arts sector and communities of all types across our nation,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “It is inspiring to see the wide range of creative projects taking place, including the work of Words Without Borders.”

“We are grateful for the NEA’s renewed support, which will help us expand access to the world’s literary voices in 2025,” said WWB Executive Director Elisabeth Jaquette. “Funding from the NEA will enable us to publish vital new writing from across the globe and host engaging virtual and in-person literary programs—all free of charge for readers worldwide.”

This year, with the support of the NEA, Words Without Borders will publish features of international writing on disability, fiction by Libyan women, poetry and prose by authors of the Vietnamese diaspora, and more in its digital magazine. WWB’s free literary events with international authors and translators will also be supported by the Grants for Arts Projects award.
