Beloved Italian translator, and Bard College faculty member, William Weaver passed away this week at the age of 90.
In a tribute to her “teacher, mentor, and friend,” translator Susan Bernofsky writes: “If you have read any of Bill Weaver’s translations, you don’t need me to tell you what a virtuoso he was, a master of English in all its most playful and most somber registers. . . . He leaves behind a rich legacy: dozens of truly glorious books and crowds of grateful former students.”
You can read a section from Weaver's translation of Carlo Emilio Gadda's That Awful Mess on the via Merulana, featured in Words without Borders, here.
