An old Ethiopian farmer's story about an ant inspired a lifetime of collecting and translating children's books for New Zealand-born writer Elizabeth Laird. In a recent interview on World Literature Today, she talks about Ethiopia's linguistic complexities, Ferdowsi's tenth-century epic poem The Shahnameh, and meeting storytellers from around the world.

Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation (10/30)

what: White Pine Press, the Cliff Becker Endowment for the Literary Arts, and the Creative Writing Program at the University of Missouri announce the second annual Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation, which produces one volume of literary translation in English, annually. These volumes initially will be bi-lingual editions of poetry, but as the endowment grows we will begin to include literary fiction and nonfiction in the prize rotation.
