The winning titles and translators for this year’s Best Translated Book Awards were announced Friday evening at the Bowery Poetry Club as part of the PEN World Voices Festival. BTBA co-founder Chad Post kicked off the event, then turned over the microphone to Lorin Stein, who announced the winners and presented the awards.  Aleš Šteger’s Book of Things, translated from the Slovenian by Brian Henry and published by BOA, took the poetry prize. In fiction, the award went to Thomas Teal’s translation from the Swedish of Tove Jansson’s The True Deceiver, published by New York Review Books. Each winning author and translator receives $5,000, courtesy of sponsor Amazon.com. I was a fiction juror, so won't comment further–discretion precludes disclosure–except to add that Thomas Teal's charming acceptance speech, in which he described receiving a thumping royalty check for a reprinted translation out of the blue, added a further celebratory note.
