Issue #2 of Triple Canopy has the first ever translation of the “Caracas Speech” that Roberto Bolaño gave when he was awarded the Rómulo Gallegos prize for his novel “The Savage Detectives.” It’s a wonderfully digressive piece that starts with Bolaño’s reminiscences on the battle between his right hand and his left foot over which would become his limb of reference (the kicker—the foot wins), and climbs into a humorous and affecting exploration of the homelands of the writer, and the necessary perils of embarking on journeys into the void.
