V. Y. Mudimbe was born in Zaire in 1947. He has written poetry, four novels, and a great many academic texts, most of which have been translated into English or were written directly in English. He came to the U.S. over fifteen years ago and teaches French literature, linguistics, and philosophy. He has taught at Haverford College, Duke University, and Stanford University.
