Born in Punjab in 1938, Navtej Bharati writes poetry and nonfiction in Punjabi and English. His book, Leela, more than a thousand pages long and co-authored with Ajmer Rode, is considered an outstanding work of twentieth-century Punjabi poetry. He earned degrees in literature and philosophy from Punjab University and the University of Victoria, Canada. Read More Before immigrating to Canada in 1968, he translated and edited Indian classics for the department of languages at Punjab University. In the 1980s he co-edited a literary quarterly, Eclipse, published in London (Canada), where he now lives with his family. He is the founding chairman of the London Citizens’ Committee for Human Rights. His awards and honors include the 1959, 1960, and 1961 Best Poet of the State Awards of the government of Punjab, India; the prestigious Panj Darya board’s prize for best emigrant Punjabi writer of the twentieth century; the Best Overseas Author award of the Punjab University languages department; and the Anᾱd Foundation (Delhi) Poetry Award.
