Monika Kompaníková (b. 1979) is a writer and visual artist. Her first book, Miesto pre samotu [A Place for Loneliness], a collection of short stories, was awarded the Ivan Krasko Prize. Her 2006 novella Biele miesta [Blind Spots] was nominated for the 2007 Anasoft Litera Prize, which she won in 2010 for her first novel, Piata loď [Boat Number Five]. In 2013 she published a children’s book, Hlbokomorské rozprávky [Deep-Sea Fairytales]. In 2008 she received the Tatra Banka Young Authors’ prize. Kompaníková’s work has appeared in journals and anthologies in Germany, Austria, the UK, the US, Poland, Serbia, Belarus, Egypt, Croatia and Hungary.
