Mialy Andriamananjara is a Malagasy writer whose work has appeared in anthologies and literary magazines in both English and French. Her first love, however, is the Malagasy language. She is working to present Malagasy writing outside of the confines of Francophone literature, focusing in particular on the heavy influence of rich oral traditions on Malagasy literature, its pointed awareness of the past, and its innate desire to reach out beyond its borders. This short story is her first published translation. She is working on translating more Malagasy authors into English. Mialy was born and raised in Antananarivo, Madagascar. She studied in Paris, France, before settling in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Soamiely Andriamananjara—also a writer—and their two children.
