Melissa Marcus is Professor of French, Emerita, Northern Arizona University. She has focused on the translation of novels and short stories by women Francophone writers from Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East. Her published translations include Fawzia Assaad's Layla, An Egyptian Woman(Africa World Press, 2005); Malika Mokeddem's Of Dreams and Assassins (The University Press of Virginia, 2000) and The Forbidden Woman(The University of Nebraska Press, 1998); and Nina Bouraoui's Forbidden Vision(Station Hill Press, 1995). She is currently translating Isabelle Eberhardt's complete works.
