Maria Tselovatova was born in Moscow in 1998. She studied in a full-immersion German-language school before beginning her comparative literature degree at the Russian State University for the Humanities. As an activist focusing on gender, sexuality, and disability, she co-coordinated the 2019 festival Women|Disability|Feminism. In the same year, her poetry was nominated for the Arkady Dragomoshchenko Prize.
