Manon Uphoff (b. 1962, the Netherlands) is a writer of short stories, novels, and essays. Her 1995 debut Begeerte (Desire) received excellent reviews and was nominated for important literary prizes, as were her novella De Vanger (The Catcher, 2002) and her novels Gemis (Loss, 1997) and Koudvuur (Gas Gangrene, 2005). De zoetheid van geweld (The Sweetness of Violence, 2013) is her most recent collection of short stories. In it she uses a range of linguistic registers to explore all aspects of the often disturbing events she describes. Sometimes she opts for an almost classical clarity, sometimes for a layered structure in which the main event alternates with thoughts and memories.
