Kátia Bandeira de Mello-Gerlach

Kátia  Bandeira de Mello-Gerlach is a Brazilian-American lawyer and fiction writer and a resident of New York City. Bandeira’s work is informed by her Lusophone heritage, her strong connection to Brazil and Latin America, and the disquiet of exile. Bandeira is a member of Universidad Desconocida, a collective of Ibero-American writers, including Javier Molea, Enrique-Vila Matas, and Carmen Boullosa, among others. Her first two books were published by Projeto Dulcinéia Catadora, part of the cartonera movement, and her subsequent books were released by Editora Oito e Meio and Diaz Grey. Bandeira’s literary work has been translated into Spanish, English, and French. She has published work in Revista Philos and Jornal Rascunho, and she offers workshops in surrealism and its ramifications. Bandeira participated as a writer and curator of the book NOSOTROS (Editora Oito e Meio, Rio de Janeiro), which featuried work by twenty noteworthy contemporary Brazilian writers. With Julio Silveira and Alex Staut, she curated the collection PERDIDAS (Imã Editorial), a collection of texts by Brazil’s most prominent writers in a homage to the children killed by urban violence in Rio de Janeiro.
