Jean-Philippe Toussaint, born in 1957, is a prominent Belgian writer and filmmaker. He rose to fame in 1985, at the age of twenty-eight, with his first novel, La Salle de bain (The Bathroom), which continued and updated the "Nouveau Roman" or "New Novel" in French-language literature. He has gone on to write seven novels, and has written and directed several films.
