Haifa` Bitar was born in Lattaquieh, Syria, and is a novelist and short story writer. Her collection of short stories, The Fallen (Beirut: Riad al Rayyess Publishers, 2000), received the Abi Al Qassem Al Shabbi prize in Tunisia. She is a practicing opthalmologist in Damascus, Syria.
