Günter de Bruyn was born in Berlin in 1926. His novels, historical biographies and cultural commentary on post-unification Germany have earned him a reputation as one of Germany's most respected men of letters. He is the recipient of numerous literary awards, most recently the 2006 Jacob Grimm Prize for the German language.
