Widely considered the greatest Dutch children’s author of the twentieth century, Annie M. G. Schmidt (1911–95) also wrote musicals, television shows, plays, and poetry for adults. In 1988, Astrid Lindgren presented her with the Hans Christian Andersen Award for her contribution to children’s literature.
