Andrea Graubart Labinger received her BA degree in Spanish from Hunter College, and her MA and Ph.D. degrees in Latin American Literature from Harvard University. She is Professor of Spanish Emerita at the University of La Verne, California, where she served as Founding Director of the University Honors Program. Labinger specializes in translating Latin American prose fiction. Among the many authors she has translated are Sabina Berman, Carlos Cerda, Daína Chaviano, Mempo Giardinelli, Ana María Shua, Alicia Steimberg, and Luisa Valenzuela. Call Me Magdalena, Labinger's translation of Steimberg's Cuando digo Magdalena (University of Nebraska Press, 2001), received Honorable Mention in the PEN International-California competition. The Rainforest, her translation of Steimberg's La selva, and Casablanca and Other Stories, an anthology of Edgar Brau's short stories, translated in collaboration with Donald and Joanne Yates, were both finalists in the PEN-USA competition for 2007. Labinger's most recent translation, Ana María Shua’s Death as a Side Effect, was published by the University of Nebraska Press in 2010. Her Web site is Trans/Latino Trans/Lation.
