Alfred Döblin was born in Stettin in 1878. His most successful novel was Berlin Alexanderplatz, published by S. Fischer in 1929. In 1933 Döblin emigrated to France and then to the U.S.; he returned to Germany in 1945, then moved to Paris in 1953. He died in 1957.
