Abdoul Mtoka was born and grew up in Bujumbura, Burundi, and earned undergraduate and law degrees at the Université d’Aix-Marseille, France. An attorney, he is an associate at Rubeya & Co.— Advocates and teaches law at the Université Lumière de Bujumbura, the Université Sagesse d’Afrique, and the Université pour la Paix et la Réconciliation, all in Burundi. He won the Michel Kayoya Prize in 2009 for his short story “Le Fils de Buyenzi” (The Son of Buyenzi) and again in 2010 for “Le contraire de l’amour” (The Contradiction of Love). He has also published legal and historical articles.
