Lorca in New York: A Celebration: the largest-ever festival in North America celebrating the work of acclaimed Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. With more than two dozen events throughout Manhattan, it focuses on the brief but prolific period (1929-1930), during which Lorca came to New York and wrote one of his most significant works, Poet in New York.

In the early hours of June 5 (the anniversary of Lorca’s birth), Barcelona-based artist David Bestué, whose work with Mark Vives was recently featured at the Venice Biennale, will roam the streets of New York as “an echo to Lorca’s poems.” His walk through the city will be a personal homage to Poet in New York, which Bestué perceives as “a combination of the poet’s physical experience of the city (movements, routes, itineraries), and a series of disturbed and disturbing metaphors which reflect the author’s solitude.”

what: Lorca’s Route in New York (Walking Tour)
Now in its third year, the New York City walking tour which traces Lorca’s haunts as a Columbia University student in 1929 and his footsteps through Harlem pulsates with poetry, anecdotes and live music. It includes stops at Columbia University where the poet lived, the Hispanic Society of America where he entertained fellow students, scenic Riverside Drive, Riverside Church, Grant’s Tomb, and the edge of Harlem. This year singer/composer Lara Bello presides an after-party to launch her newest recording, inspired by Lorca’s Songs.
