“Why break a language? To wake it up,” writes poet, translator, and WWB contributor Ilya Kaminsky in the latest issue of Poetry.
Three Percent praises “the exquisite texture and lively rhythms” of Cuban born writer Severo Sarduy’s novel Firefly in Mark Fried's English translation. The novel takes place in the fictional city Upsalón U, a pre-Castro Cuba filled with “hurricanes, slave markets, seamy brothels, mystical cults, radios, jukeboxes and baseball caps (even a big screen TV).” In bleak but funny prose, Firefly explores corruption, exile, alienation, and the search for identity.
The January issue of Asymptote is live–new writing from around the world plus book reviews and essays on the author-translator relationship, and visual art and translation.

Ann Arbor publisher Dzanc Books is launching a new imprint, DISQUIET, which will focus on contemporary literature from around the world that has been translated into English. Look for its first two titles–European Trash (Sixteen Ways to Remember a Father) by Ulf Peter Hallberg, translated from the Swedish and A True Actor by Jacinto Lucas Pires, translated from the Portugese–this year, and Sank’ya by Zakhar Prilipen, translated from the Russian, in February 2014.
