Words without Borders is pleased to announce that writer, editor, and WWB contributor Geoff Wisner's second book, African Lives: An Anthology of Memoirs and Autobiographies, will be appearing next spring from Lynne Rienner Publishers.
The book will include more than 40 selections from African writers across the continent, including several that Wisner has written about for WWB: Assia Djebar (Algeria), Manu Dibango (Cameroon), Leila Ahmed (Egypt), Leila Abouzeid, Ibn Battuta, Mohamed Choukri, and Larbi Layachi (Morocco), and one of the killers of Rwanda whose oral histories are collected in Machete Season by Jean Hatzfeld. Translators and WWB contributors Antoine Bargel and Alexis Pernsteiner will also translate passages from memoirs by Yasmina Khadra (Algeria), Christian Dumoux (Madagascar), and Tahar Ben Jelloun (Morocco).
Please visit Wisner's Peerbackers page to support this exciting project and help bring the voices of some amazing African writers to light. Lynne Rienner Publishers has generously offered a grant toward the cost of permissions, and Wisner has added his entire advance for the book. He only needs $330 to reach his fundraising goal of $3,000, and bring the anthology to print. Chip in by August 30 to help him reach his goal.
