A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Ilze Duarte is a Portuguese-to-English literary translator. She has translated the works of contemporary Brazilian writers Marília Arnaud and João Anzanello Carrascoza and would like to translate twentieth-century Brazilian authors as well.
Ilze is a recipient of the Sundial House 2024 Literary Translation Award, which includes the upcoming publication of her translation of Marilia Arnaud’s short story collection The Book of Affects. Her translations of Arnaud’s and Carrascoza’s short stories and novel excerpts have appeared or are forthcoming in Michigan Quarterly Review, MAYDAY Magazine, Asymptote Journal, Exchanges Journal, Columbia Journal Online, Massachusetts Review, Ambit, and Your Impossible Voice. Her essays on literary translation are featured in Hopscotch Translation. Ilze’s own short story collection debut, The Heart Beats Faster, is slated for publication by Betty Books in 2025. Ilze lives with her family in Milpitas, California.
