Her glasses, at once a reflection and filter of reality, are always perched on her nose. Through them, Ayavi Lake attempts to grasp what she can from the world around her. And when she wants to see something else, she takes them off for a few minutes. This gives rise to the magical realism that permeates many of her texts.
In 2019, she published Le Marabout (VLB Éditeur), winner of the Prix des Horizons imaginaires. The short story collection brings Montreal’s multiethnic Parc Ex neighborhood to life and is currently being adapted into a feature film. La Sarzène (VLB Éditeur, 2022) further explores the notion of transmission through the history of women. Her writing is marked by the imaginary of the three countries she has lived in: Senegal, France, and Quebec.
