The Banff Centre Press has just published a collection of essays on translation, Beyond Words: Translating the World, edited by Susan Ouriou, director of the Banff International Literary Translation Center. The Centre offers an annual summer residency for translators working into and from the languages of the Americas, and this volume presents essays by twenty-one residents from nine countries, presented here in French and Spanish as well as in English. (And the French and Spanish pieces are themselves translated into English.) Offerings include Edith Grossman's introduction to her new translation of Don Quixote and Suzanne Jill Levine's preface to the reissue of her Subversive Scribe, as well as pieces by Katherine Silver, Sheila Fischman, and Paulo da Costa. Beyond Words can be ordered here, by emailing press@banffcentre.ca, or by calling 403.762.6410.
