Raymond Stock is writing a biography of Naguib Mahfouz, with his cooperation, for Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. book publishers in New York. A doctoral candidate in Arabic literature at the University of Pennsylvania, his articles, poems and translations from Arabic have appeared in publications in Britain, Egypt, France, Israel, the United States and elsewhere.
Guest Editor of a special Egypt issue of The Massachusetts Review (Winter 2001/2002), his collected translations of Mahfouz's short stories, Voices from the Other World: Ancient Egyptian Tales, were published by The American University in Cairo Press in 2002, and in paperback by Random House/Anchor Books in 2004. In addition, his translation of Mahfouz's first published novel, Khufu's Wisdom (*ŠñAbath al-aqdar, 1939) was published in 2003, also by the AUC Press, followed by a Random House/Anchor Books paperback edition in 2005. In 2004, AUC published Stock's translation of the first volume of Mahfouz's current serialized work, The Dreams (Ahlam fatrat al-naqaha); a second volume is scheduled for 2006. In 2005, the AUC Press published Stock's translations of Mahfouz's selected short fiction, The Seventh Heaven: Stories of the Supernatural.
