Patricia Anne Odber de Baubeta is director of Portuguese studies at the University of Birmingham, where she has taught since 1981. She began her academic career as a medievalist and has published books and articles on medieval Portuguese literature and ecclesiastical history.
More recently, she has carried out research on sociolingiuistics, particularly the language of advertising, fairy tale motifs in contemporary literature, and translation issues. She is now preparing The History of Portuguese Literature in English Translation, Volume 1: From the Medieval Galician Portuguese Lyric to the Theatre of Gil Vicente.
