Mariem mint Derwich was born to a Mauritanian father and a French mother in Nouakchott in 1964 and grew up in the Mauritanian desert. She moved to Paris in 1982 to study at the Sorbonne. She is a columnist at the weekly Le Calame and the author of the poetry collection Mille et un Je.
