Imants Ziedonis, though born and raised in a Latvian fishing village, since early childhood has felt closest to the countryside. Since the 1960s he has been one of Latvia's most prominent writers, the author of many volumes of poetry, literary prose, children's books, a childhood memoir, and translations.
