The novel Party Headquarters (Altera, 2006) brought Georgi Tenev his first serious recognition, winning the VIC Bulgarian Novel of the Year Award (2007). The novel came out in Spanish from the Baile del Sol Publishing House in 2010. His latest novel, Mr.
(Altera, 2010), is about the fate of Georgi Markov—a Bulgarian émigré writer who was killed in London at the height of the Cold War. M.’s story brings together diverse themes: the saving of the Bulgarian Jews, Prague Spring, the propagandistic power of television, the bankruptcy of socialist literature. Holy Light (2009) is a book of short stories featuring issues of biopolitics and violence. A PEN jury awarded Angela Rodel a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant and defined the book as a fusion of “political sci-fi with striking eroticisim.” Holy Light was translated into Polish and published in 2012 by Scriptum Publishing House in Krakow. Tenev’s plays have been produced by leading Bulgarian directors. In 2012, he received the Askeer Prize for Best Bulgarian Play. His radio play The Atoll won Best European Radiodrama of the Year at the presitigious Prix Europa festival in Berlin.
