Berta Vias Mahou was born in Madrid in 1961, and studied geography and history (specializing in ancient history).
A writer and literary translator, she is the author of three novels—Leo en la cama (“Leo in Bed,” Espasa Narrativa, 1999), Los pozos de la nieve (“The Wells of Snow,” Acantilado, 2008) and Venían a buscarlo a él (“They Were Coming for Him,” Acantilado, 2010, winner of the Premio Dulce Chacón de Narrativa 2011)—as well as a book of stories (Ladera norte—“The North Face,” Acantilado, 2001), in which “The Devil Lives in Lisbon” appears, an essay on La imagen de la mujer en la literatura (“The Image of the Woman in Literature,” Anaya, 2000) and three young adult novels. She has translated writers including Goethe, Zweig, Schnitzler, Joseph Roth, Gertrud Kolmar, and Ödön von Horváth.
