Augusta Faro was born in Goiânia, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, where she still lives. Her work draws from local legend and the oral tradition of Brazil's backlands, in which the fantastic and the absurd rampage through her characters' otherwise uneventful, small-town lives.
Faro has published a vast body of literature that includes sixty books of children's poetry, four books of adult poetry, and the collection of short stories A Friagem (The Chill), from which this story was taken. She also regularly contributes short stories and chronicles to a number of newspapers throughout Brazil's Central-West. Her latest work, a collection of novellas for adults, is due for release in 2008. Several of the stories from A Friagem, including íAs formigasë (íThe Antsë), have been made into short films.
