Bill Johnston

Bill Johnston has translated over twenty works of poetry, prose, and drama from the Polish. His 2007 translation of Tadeusz Różewicz’s new poems (Archipelago Books) won the inaugural Found in Translation Prize for best English translation from Polish, and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Poetry Award. He has translated the work of writers such as Magdalena Tulli (e.g. Dreams and Stones, Archipelago Books, 2004, winner of the 2005 AATSEEL Translation Prize), Jerzy Pilch (e.g. The Mighty Angel, Open Letter, 2009), Witold Gombrowicz (e.g. Bacacay, Archipelago Books, 2004), and Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki (Peregrinary, Zephyr Press, 2008, shortlisted for Best Translated Book Award-Poetry). Dukla will be published next year by Dalkey Archive, after their success with Andrzej Stasiuk’s Fado, also translated by Johnston.
