Carol Brown Janeway to Receive 2014 Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature

New York City, New York, June 5, 2014—Carol Brown Janeway, senior vice-president and senior editor at Alfred A. Knopf, and distinguished literary translator, will be the recipient of the 2014 Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature, Words without Borders announced today.

Carol Brown Janeway has been a leading advocate for literature in translation during her long career at Alfred A. Knopf. The list of international writers she has published includes such luminaries as Patrick Süskind, José Donoso, Yukio Mishima, Elsa Morante, Ivan Klíma, Robert Musil, and Nobel laureates Imre Kertész, Heinrich Böll, and Thomas Mann. She is the translator of seminal works by Bernhard Schlink (The Reader), Thomas Bernhard (My Prizes), Ferdinand von Schirach (Crime), Sándor Márai (Embers), Margriet de Moor (The Storm), and Daniel Kehlmann (Measuring the World), among others.

“Carol Brown Janeway has dedicated her career as both an editor and a translator to promoting literary voices that we cannot —and should not—live without,” said Maria B. Campbell, vice-chair of the Words without Borders Board of Directors and founder of Maria B. Campbell Associates. “We are thrilled to honor Carol’s tremendous efforts with this year’s Ottaway Award.”

The Ottaway Award will be presented to Ms. Janeway at the annual Words without Borders gala on October 28, 2014 in New York City, chaired by Maria B. Campbell.

Named in honor of the first chair of Words without Borders, James H. Ottaway, Jr., the annual award recognizes an individual whose work and activism has supported Words without Borders’ mission of promoting cultural understanding through the publication and promotion of international literature. In 2013, the inaugural Ottaway Award was presented to renowned editor Drenka Willen.

WWB’s 2014 gala will be held at Tribeca Three Sixty in New York City on October 28, 2014.
