“In Quickness is Truth”: Bilingual Writing Workshop with Frank Báez

Join Words Without Borders, the Brooklyn Public Library, and celebrated Dominican poet and writer Frank Báez as we tackle the fear of the blank page!

The sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury once said: “In quickness is truth. The faster you blurt, the more swiftly you write, the more honest you are.”

Join celebrated Dominican poet and writer Frank Báez as we tackle the fear of the blank page! Baez will discuss his writing career in the Dominican Republic, read some poetry, and lead short writing exercises designed to help participants overcome writer’s block. Whether you’re an experienced creative writer or trying it out for the first time, this workshop will help you find the words to express yourself—in English or in Spanish.

Únase al célebre poeta y escritor dominicano Frank Báez para enfrentarnos al miedo a la página en blanco. Báez hablará de su carrera como escritor en la República Dominicana, leerá algunos poemas y dirigirá breves ejercicios de escritura diseñados para ayudar a participantes a superar el bloqueo del escritor. Ya sea usted un escritor creativo con experiencia o lo intente por primera vez, este taller le ayudará a encontrar las palabras para expresarse, en inglés o en español.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born in 1978 in Santo Domingo, Frank Báez has made a name for himself as one of the Dominican Republic’s most relevant poets and nonfiction writers. He has published six poetry books, a short story collection, and four nonfiction books. He is a founding member of El Hombrecito, the first Dominican Spoken Word band, which has three albums to its credit. He co-directed the digital poetry magazine Ping Pong, which published an entire generation of young poets and was characterized by translations and essays that addressed new poetic trends. From 2013 to 2020, he was chief editor of Revista Global, editing almost forty issues. In 2022, he edited the trilingual poetry anthology  On/Off-Shore: Poets of the Caribbean and Caribbean Diaspora. In 2017, he was selected by the Hay Festival as a member of Bogotá39, the list of the best Latin American writers under forty years of age. In 2023, he was a recipient of the University of Texas Mellon Fellowship for High Impact Scholars. His work has appeared in numerous anthologies, and translations of his books of poetry have been published in Arabic, Dutch, German, and Bangla. Two of his books have been translated into English: Last Night I Dreamt I Was a DJ (2014) and The End of the World Came to My Neighborhood (2022).
