 Hotakainen has received many literary awards, including the Finlandia Prize for his novel Trench Road  (2002), the Nordic Council Literature Prize for the same novel in 2004, and the Runeberg Prize in 2010 for his novel The Human Part. In 2011 The Human Part was awarded France’s prestigious Prix Courrier International for best translated novel. Differences of class and gender, family, home life, and work have been big themes in Finnish realistic-naturalistic literature and are also the most developed motifs in Hotakainen’s prose works. Hotakainen’s oeuvre consists of eleven novels, four collections of poetry, books for children’s and young adults, works for the theatre, and radio plays.
