Estelle Gilson has translated works by Massimo Bontempelli as well as those of other major Italian writers previously unknown to American readers, notably Umberto Saba and Giacomo Debenedetti. Her translation of Saba's Stories and Recollections won several awards, including the MLA's first Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione prize for the best literary translation of the previous two years. Her translation of two Bontempelli novels, Separations, received ForeWord Magazine's Gold Medallion for Fiction in Translation. She has also published English translations of works in Hebrew and French, as well as modern versions of Juvenal's satires.
