Suzanne Jill Levine, professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara and distinguished translator of Latin American literature, is currently general editor for Penguin Classics of a five-volume series of Borges's essays and poetry. She has received PEN awards, National Endowment grants, and a Guggenheim fellowship, among other honors; her books include the literary biography Manuel Puig and the Spider Woman: His Life and Fictions (2000; 2002) and The Subversive Scribe: Translating Latin American Fiction (1991; to be reissued by Dalkey Archive in 2009).
