Klaus Pohl

Born in 1952 in a small mediaeval town in Bavaria, Klaus Pohl is one of Germany?s most acclaimed contemporary playwrights. His works have been produced throughout Germany and in Austria, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea and the U.K....

The Royal Court Theatre in London presented Karate Billy Comes Home in 1992 and Waiting Room Germany in 1995 for a sold-out run. His newest critically acclaimed play premiered in January 2005 at the Burgtheater in Vienna and is sold out until June 2005.

Pohl holds a degree in acting from the Max Reinhardt Seminar at the University for Music and Arts in Berlin, Germany. At the age of 30 he became the first living German playwright in almost 30 years to have a world premiere at the prestigious Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria. He is a recipient of the Schiller Award for Literature, Gerhard Hauptmann Drama Award, the Muehlheim Drama Award and the German Critics Award for the Best Play of the Year, among others. Screenplays for movies and television include Otomo (directed by Frieder Schleich, 2001) and Farewell (directed by Jan Schuette, 2002). Both films were shown at Film Forum in New York City last year. As an actor Pohl has worked with Pina Bausch, Luc Bondy, Giorgio Strehler, Robert Wilson, Juergen Flimm and Peter Zadek.
