In Tenerife he also founded and directed the literary workshop Entrelíneas, after having taught creative writing at the Casa de la Cultura de Santa Cruz and the Universidad de la Laguna, among other institutions. He has published two books of short stories, Cuentario y otros relatos (Okura, 1989) and La noche de Morgana (Alfaguara, 2005), as well as the novels Los años inútiles (Alfaguara, Madrid, 2002), El año que rompí contigo (Alfaguara 2003), Un millón de soles (Alfaguara, 2008), La paz de los vencidos (Alfaguara, 2009), Un asunto sentimental (Alfaguara, 2012), and El enigma del convento (Alfaguara, 2014). This last novel was awarded the prestigious Torrente Ballester prize in 2014. As a professor of creative writing, he has taught at universities and cultural centers in Tenerife, Madrid, Granada, A Coruña, Lima, Boston, Miami, Geneva, Vienna and Green Bay, and he currently directs the Center for the Formation of Novelists in Madrid. He has also contributed to a range of publications such as El País, Letras Libres, Eñe, and the magazine Mercurio.
