The Cuban writer Guillermo Rosales committed suicide in Miami in 1993. He was 47 years old. Like William Figueras, the protagnoist of his novel, My Angel, he left Cuba in 1979 for Florida. "I am not a political exilee. I am total exilee. I think sometimes that if I had been born in Brazil, in Spain, in Venezuela or in Scandinavia, I would also have fled their streets, their ports and their meadows," Rosales once said. My Angel, published in Miami in 1986 described a descent into Hell in an hallucinatory universe where other wrecks rejected by all (and placed in a boarding house) try to survive.
