Words without Borders announces an issue of writing about oil.

New York City, New York, October 1, 2012 - Words without Borders (WWB) magazine announces the publication of an issue dedicated to writing about oil.

The issue features nonfiction, fiction, graphic work, and poetry from Russia, Germany, South Africa, Italy, Argentina, Lebanon, and Nigeria addressing the industry and its impact on individuals around the world.

Political scientist Michael L. Ross leads off the issue with an essay linking oil wealth and the development of nations. Translator Peter Theroux examines the role of oil in the work of Saudi master Abdelrahman Munif. Science fiction superstar Andreas Eschbach depicts a loner with a sixth sense for oil, while South African novelist Etienne van Heerden discovers the side effects of fracking in the veld. Other contributors include two graphic novelists, Lebanon’s Mazen Kerbaj and Italy’s Davide Reviati, as well as fiction writers Anja Kampmann and Alexander Snegiryov, journalist María Sonia Cristoff, and poet Stephen E. Kekeghe.

WWB editorial director Susan Harris comments, “Both blessing and curse, oil is a social and economic force around the world, driving both development and blight. We hope our readers find these investigations as illuminating, and sobering, as we do.”

Elsewhere in this month’s issue, we feature writing exploring the connection between Ethiopia and Italy, selected and introduced by Maaza Mengiste, author of Beneath the Lion's Gaze. Novelist Gabriella Ghermandi returns to her homeland to honor her father, graphic novelist Paolo Castaldi tracks a tragic emigration, and poet Surafel Wondimu curses the gods.

The issue will be released October 1, 2012.
