Words without Borders announces its June issue: The Queer Issue

New York City, New York, June 7, 2010Words without Borders (WWB) magazine announces the publication of an issue exploring the realm of international queer literature.

In celebrating LGBT History Month, Words without Borders continues its commitment to providing a forum for the stories that are often untold or hidden. The annual Queer Issue offers a platform for the literary exploration of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience from around the world.

Rohan Kamicheril, WWB Editor, stated, “The writers in this issue defy convention with the variety of their literary styles and the rare clarity that each brings to our theme. They may visit the familiar ground of letters to old lovers, walks down memory lane, and fights over directions, but there's no mistaking the queer genius of invention at play in all their work.”

In the excerpt from her novel Baby Jane, Finland’s Sofi Oksanen (who we were delighted to feature in our PEN World Voices issue this April) paints a troubling picture with the story of a heartbroken gay woman who moves in with a man solely because he owns a bathtub.  Oksanen’s meticulous account of the detailsof her day form an unsettling and illuminating study of the strength of denial. This, and other haunting oddities abound in this month’s issue.

The other excellent authors in this issue include: Israel’s Yehoshua Bar-Yosef, Indonesia’s Syahmedi Dean, Greece’s Angela Dimitrikaki, Germany’s Gunther Geltinger, Russia’s Dmitry Kuzmin, France’s Fabrice Neaud, and Poland’s Ewa Schilling.

Happy Pride Month!
