Words without Borders announces its July issue: Sports
New York City, New York, July 6, 2010—Words without Borders (WWB) magazine announces the publication of an issue exploring the world of sports.
With the World Cup winding down and summer sports in full swing, Words without Borders magazine takes a look at sports both literally and metaphorically. From chess to soccer and from France to Japan, the authors featured this month pick up the ball and run with it.
WWB Editorial Director Susan Harris stated, “Whether counting down the clock or going into extra innings, these writers bring the playing field to the page. We’re delighted to present this international lineup.”
In the short story “The Penalty,” by the Algerian writer Anouar Benmalek, Bashir, the main character, has lost his short-term memory; he sits quietly in a packed stadium at a match and tries to figure out why he has a strip of dynamite wound round his chest. The story follows the protagonist’s search for answers from the stadium to a “holy man.” And this is just one example of the amazing stories and excerpts from “sports stories” covered in this month’s magazine.
The other sport fanatics represented in this issue are: Russia’s Andrei Sen-Senkov, Italy’s Fabio Stassi, Japan’s Motoyuki Shibata, Germany’s Burkhard Spinnen, The Netherlands’ Rene Appel, Italy’s Carmine Abate, and Spain’s Sergi Pàmies.
