Words without Borders announces its August Issue: Writing from Hungary
New York City, New York, August 6, 2010—Words without Borders (WWB) magazine announces the publication of an issue exploring the rich literary landscape of Hungary
While much attention has been paid to the writing of Western and Northern Europe, Eastern European literature is underrepresented in English translation. WWB is delighted to address that imbalance, presenting the work of nine contemporary Hungarian writers selected by guest editor and eminent translator Judith Sollosy.
WWB Editorial Director Susan Harris centers this issue when she states, “"Literature in Hungary is both historical record and contemporary report, as authors consider the national identity in the flux of history. That political element combines with universal concerns to produce a rich and varied literature. The authors presented here, in Judith Sollosy's dazzling translations, demonstrate the range of this dynamic literary culture."
Hungarian authors in this issue, in the order in which they appear, include János Háy, Sándor Tar, Lajos Parti Nagy, Magda Szécsi, Ervin Lázár, Noémi Szécsi, Péter Esterházy, Virág ErdÅs, and Mihály Kornis.
This issue was made possible by a generous gift from the Hungarian Cultural Society New York.
